How the Power of Positivity can Benefit the Health of Your Clients During Your Personal Support Worker Career

Personal support workers (PSWs) do a lot for their clients. Often providing at-home care in private residences, they offer assistance with a wide variety of daily tasks which their clients are unable to perform themselves, due to limitations relating to their health or age. These tasks range from personal care and hygiene to cooking and meal planning as well as home management, and they can make a huge positive difference in the lives of clients.

In addition to their more practical health- and household-related duties, PSWs also offer companionship to their clients, and can play a major role in boosting their clients’ positivity by offering them encouragement and a listening ear. In some cases, the emotional boost that a PSW provides might even be just as important as the practical tasks they perform.

If you’re enrolled in personal support worker courses, or considering training for a career in the field, here’s how you can use the power of positivity to benefit your clients and their health.

Helping Seniors Develop Positive Attitudes Towards Aging Can Boost their Health

One of the ways that PSWs can benefit their clients’ health using positivity is by helping seniors develop a more positive view of the aging process.

Research has suggested that having positive self-perceptions about the benefits of aging can help the elderly stay mentally, physically, and psychologically younger. One study, for example, found that among older adults, positive attitudes about aging were associated with reduced frailty, which in turn seemed to improve cognitive health as well. Another study from Yale School of Public Health indicated that those with positive stereotypes relating to aging were more likely to fully recover from a disability and showed a slower rate of decline when it came to performing household activities like bathing, dressing, and walking.

Links have also been found between positive thinking and stress reduction, improved immunity, and a lower risk of heart disease. Among individuals with a family history of heart disease, for example, a positive outlook cut the probability of heart attacks and other cardiovascular events by one-third.

Research suggests that a positive attitude could also limit the effects of stress, improve physical balance, enhance self-efficacy, and increase engagement in healthy behaviours.

This shows that encouraging positivity and an optimistic outlook among your clients during your personal support worker career can not only improve their quality of life by boosting their mood, but could also have a positive impact on their health.

How to Help Senior Clients Stay Positive After PSW College

When you graduate from PSW college and begin working with clients, there are a wide variety of ways that you can help them achieve a positive outlook. In some cases, simply listening to clients share their stories and offering them friendly companionship and encouragement could be enough to improve their mood and help them feel more optimistic. Incorporating physical activity into a client’s daily routines (while being mindful of their limitations) can also boost their mood and improve their outlook. Keeping older clients intellectually engaged can help as well, whether by reading, doing puzzles, or learning new skills.

Overall, the appropriate approach will depend on the client, but regardless of their preferences, PSWs can play an important role in offering them the encouragement, assistance, and support they need to stay positive and healthy.
